As Director of Business Development at Empire Energy Partners, I am delighted to witness the transformative strides being made in the offshore wind energy sector, particularly in the Central Atlantic. On June 28, 2024, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) unveiled the Central Atlantic Final Sale Notice, setting the stage for a groundbreaking offshore wind lease sale scheduled for August 14, 2024. This momentous step marks a new chapter in our nation’s commitment to clean energy and economic revitalization.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
The Central Atlantic lease sale is not just a regulatory formality; it’s a bold move toward a future powered by clean, renewable energy. This initiative has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions while creating thousands of well-paying jobs across the region. For those of us at Empire Energy Partners, this is an unparalleled opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient energy landscape.
The lease areas being offered in this sale could power up to 2.2 million homes, directly supporting the Administration’s ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. This is about more than just numbers; it’s about laying the foundation for a future where clean energy isn’t just an ideal but a reality.
Mike Milledge, our Senior Director of Offshore Wind, summed it up perfectly: “The Central Atlantic’s offshore wind lease sale is a landmark opportunity for both the renewable energy sector and the broader economy. At Empire Energy Offshore, we recognize the immense potential this represents—not just in terms of clean energy generation but also in building a strong domestic supply chain and creating high-quality jobs. This is a defining moment for the future of American energy.”
Strategic Planning for Sustainable Development
BOEM’s meticulous planning process for the Central Atlantic lease sale is a testament to the importance of science-driven decision-making in the development of offshore wind resources. By collaborating with NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, BOEM utilized an advanced spatial planning model to carefully select the most suitable locations for offshore wind projects. This approach ensured that the development areas were chosen with a balanced consideration of existing ocean uses and the need to protect vital marine resources.
From an initial analysis of six areas covering 3.9 million acres on the Central Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), BOEM refined the final lease areas to two, totaling approximately 278,000 acres. This refined selection process underscores the importance of balancing renewable energy development with the preservation of our natural and cultural resources, a principle we at Empire Energy Partners wholeheartedly support.

Looking Ahead
As the August 14 lease sale approaches, I am filled with optimism for what lies ahead. The Central Atlantic offshore wind lease sale is a crucial step toward a future where clean energy powers our homes, strengthens our economy, and protects our planet. At Empire Energy Partners, we are excited to continue playing a role in this important journey, leveraging our expertise to help shape the future of offshore wind in the United States.
The path forward is clear: with careful planning, innovative thinking, and a shared commitment to sustainability, we can harness the power of the wind to drive a new era of energy independence and environmental stewardship.
